Big changes have occurred for the Lady Squadron over the past month at Highland Home School.

Many years ago, retired teacher and coach Wanda Pouncey had the girl’s weight room built at Highland Home. It has been a big resource for the Lady Squadron athletics ever since.

Second year head volleyball, Lady Squadron basketball and high school P.E. coach Melinda Avant has revamped the weight room. The facilities were still in good condition, but needed minor fixes.

The weight room has had several changes after many hours of volunteer work from parents, coach Avant, Wendy Davis, coach Sport and athletes.

“Since I’ve started this project, we’ve been out of the weight room. Much to my surprise, the girls have been begging to get back in here. Weight condition is very important in any sport,” said Avant.

The carpet was ripped out and the floors, walls, bathrooms and lockers were painted. School logos were painted on the floor and walls as well.

Also, coach Avant plans on implementing a “Wall of Fame” for a female athlete voted on by the girls at the end of each year.

This athlete will show sportsmanship, leadership and pride in the Flying Squadron.

Highland Home School Lady Squadron members worked together to bring the weight room to completion.

“As a female athlete, we are thankful for coach Avant and the work she has put into our weight room. Coach Pouncey did a lot for us when she built the weight room, and now coach Avant is just making sure we continue to have what we need,” said senior softball and volleyball player Kaitlyn Sport.

The weight room changes were paid for with private donations and fundraisers.

The Lady Squadron plans on getting back into the weight room and working hard to continue to build their athletic program.
