Matthews earns All-League football honors

Greenville native Warren Matthews, right, recorded 38 tackles, including 3 sacks and 8 tackles for a loss, earning recognition as an honorable mention defensive tackle  to the Virginia Preparatory All-League football team.

Greenville native Warren Matthews, right, recorded 38 tackles, including 3 sacks and 8 tackles for a loss, earning recognition as an honorable mention defensive tackle to the Virginia Preparatory All-League football team.

Greenville native Warren Matthews, Jr. was selected as an Honorable Mention Defensive Tackle to the Virginia Preparatory All-League Football Team. 

Warren, a high school junior, attends Woodberry Forest School located in Orange, Virginia. 

He finished the season with 38 tackles, 8 of which were for a loss and 3 of which were sacks for a net loss of 27 yards.

Woodberry Forest finished the year with a 9-1 record and ranked 4th in all Virginia high schools.  In lieu of competing in the state play-offs, Woodberry Forest plays rival Episcopal High School in a game that has been played for the last 116 years, the longest continuous high school series in the South. 

Woodberry defeated Episcopal 34-21 in this year’s game. Six Woodberry Forest seniors are committed to sign NCAA Division I football scholarships with the University of Virginia (3), Army, the University of Connecticut and Bryant University.

Warren is the son of Warren and Elizabeth Matthews.  He is the grandson of the late Anne Stabler and Dr. Paul A. Stabler, Sr.
