In eventful Tuesday night games, the Luverne Tigers competed against the Andalusia Bulldogs with two teams securing a win.

All teams had hard fought games, but in the end the varsity team fell short to the Bulldogs, 63-35.

The Tigers trailed Andalusia by very little in the first quarter. Yet just before the end of the quarter, lead point guard Thailon Gandy went down with an injury.  Gandy will not return for the remainder of the season.

“Anytime a key player is lost it affects everyone,” LHS Head Coach Richard Dorsey said.

“He is a big part of what we do.”

Senior La’Darion Harrell was also missing from action due to a sickness.  For next week, Dorsey says he will make the necessary adjustments.

“We’re going to come with a little bit of a different game plan,” Dorsey said.

“Some players are going to have to step up, and accept their new roles.”

The varsity team beat New Brockton last week, 55-48, but suffered a tough loss to Greenville, 42-78.

The Lady Tigers took down the Bulldogs, 39-35. A high-energy game, the girls battled until the last second.  Sophomore point guard Jayla June suffered a sprained ankle in the fourth quarter of play.

“I had to pull in my freshman, Vaniyah Williams, off the bench,” Head Coach Rasheeda May said.

“She played great minutes for me, but it was a team effort.“

Coach May said the game showed improvement in the team’s defense.

“We’re still lacking in some areas —rebounding and free throws,” she said.

“I’m still looking to pull it out, and I think we’re going to do it.”

Last Tuesday the girls demolished New Brockton 40-18, and narrowly skated by Greenville 62-60.

The buzzer was on B-team’s side against Andalusia, securing a 41-40 win.

“It was a tough game,” Head Coach Ro Harris said.

“We played offense well, and great defense.”

Harris credits Zay Gregory with giving the defense its necessary spark. B-team went into halftime trailing the Bulldogs by 10.

“We came back and ran offense,” Harris said.

“I told them we had to set good picks, drive to the goal and draw fouls. We did that.”

B-team beat New Brockton, 56-23.  Yet, fell short to Greenville, 40-49.

“We’re going to work on running offense better, and breaking the press — that was our problem against Greenville.”

The Luverne Tigers will host New Brockton on Thursday night, followed by travelling to Red Level on Friday.
