Next week will kick off basketball at Luverne High School, and they are set to battle in-county rival Highland Home.

The boys varsity Head Coach Richard Dorsey says he is excited to see what the season will bring.

“We are still young,” Dorsey said.

“But we are going to try to play a very exciting type of ball.”

Last year’s season, though not the best, brought experience to the young players returning this year.

“We have two seniors and two sophomores returning,” Dorsey said.

“Last year was my second losing season. We lost about seven seniors the year before.”

The returning players are seniors La’Darion Harrell and Rondarius Stelle. Dionte (Tay) Brantley and Thailon Gandy are returning sophomores.

Dorsey says he has faith in the guys and their capabilities.

“I’m hoping my seniors are going to turn it on, and play like they are capable of doing,” he said.

“If those four can pan out, we’re definitely going to have a good year.”

Luverne High School competes in the 2A division. Their area competition consists of Central Haynesville, Calhoun and Goshen.

“I’m really excited to see how we will compete in the area,” Dorsey said.

“We probably play one of the toughest areas in the state.”

For the season, the Tigers are hopeful to grab the area championship.

“We’re always trying to win the area, so that we can host the area tournament,” Dorsey said.

“If we’re lucky enough, maybe we can advance to the regionals.”

Win or lose, Dorsey says he wants to see continued growth in his players.

“My hopes are for them to be better than they were in the beginning,” he said.

“As long as I can help them grow as people and players, then I’m happy with that.”

The Luverne Tigers will travel to Highland Home on Tuesday, Nov. 29th. Games will begin at 4:30 pm.
