With the Christmas season just around the corner, it’s time to begin the hunt for the perfect tree. But why waste hours driving to Wetumpka, Birmingham or Andalusia when you can shop locally from those who grow locally?

Matthew Pippin first entertained the idea of starting his own Christmas tree farm five years ago.

“We planted these we have out here five years ago, and last year was the first year we’ve sold any,” he said.

“We had a good response last year. I can’t remember the total, but it was a good year last year for our first year. We’ve had a lot more people find out about it now and ask a lot more questions.”

The farm offers Virginia Pine trees in a variety of shapes and sizes, ranging from 6-foot to 8-foot trees. According to Matthew, the Virginia Pine is the perfect type of Christmas tree because of its ability to hold ornaments without drooping under the weight.

Matthew says it can take anywhere from four to six years for the trees to reach their current heights, and sizes as well as heights can vary depending on the amount of rain they receive.

While some may dive into the world of tree sales for the money, Matthew began his adventure as a way of entertaining his children and wife.

“Kids really like it and enjoy it. There’s nowhere local to get a real tree,” he said.

“When I grew up, we always had a real tree. It was my kids and my wife more than me; I can’t take credit for wanting to do this. We said why not and gave it a shot.”

Matthew’s son, Wyatt, has helped his father with the care and maintenance of the tree farm since the beginning, and he enjoys helping people find the tree that is perfect for them.

“I just thought it was fun to do. It’s fun to help my daddy with the farm, and I like doing this,” Wyatt said.
