The residents of Meadowcrest Apartments in Luverne added a new feature to all of their homes, a green light bulb in support of United States’ Veterans.

Resident Manager Peggy Fowler heard of the Greenlight a Vet movement, and thought it would be perfect for the Meadowcrest community.

“I saw it on TV,” she said.

“Wal-Mart was talking about leaving on one light to support a veteran. I thought gosh, we can do that.”

Wal-Mart says its Greenlight A Vet campaign was established to bring visible national support for our veterans by changing one light to green.

The campaign is set to last through Nov. 11, yet Meadowcrest has decided to shine their lights for the entire month.

“We only have one veteran living with us,” Fowler said.

“But, just about everyone here has someone in their family that’s a veteran or was a veteran.”

Of the 32 apartments, 30 now feature the green porch light. Jim Allen, a near three-year resident of Meadowcrest, says that the light is a beautiful way to show thanks.

“I think they’re very pretty,” he said.

“We’re very thankful to them for what they have to deal with in life, and on the battle grounds.”

With the success of the Greenlight a Vet campaign at Meadowcrest, the owners of the apartments, Ard Inc., have approved the campaign for all of their properties.

Fowler says she would love for the campaign to catch on throughout the City of Luverne.

“Can you imagine, as a veteran, driving through the city of Luverne, and seeing all the green lights everywhere?” she says. “Anybody can go purchase a dollar light bulb, and burn it through the month of November for their great works.”

Wal-Mart chose the color green because it represents hope, renewal and well-being. “Greenlight” is also a term used to activate forward movement.
