After over 30 years of serving the City of Luverne’s Street and Sanitation Department, supervisor Clarence Searight has retired from his position.

Last week, fellow co-workers, family and city officials gathered to celebrate Searight’s long career with the city.

“It was a real nice celebration,” said Searight’s wife of 31 years, Marie.

“I’m glad we could kind of surprise him.”

Although Searight had committed 34 years of service to the city, it was not in his immediate plans to retire.

“He’s become sick, and had to retire,” Marie said.

“He has cancer.”

Searight has been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. Now in treatment, Searight showed only happiness and appreciation during the celebration.

“He has had good times with the city,” said Marie.

“For now, we just want to take some time and focus on him getting well.”

Searight, a native of Crenshaw County, says he will miss his co-workers, other city employees and serving the community.

“It was a great celebration, and very much so deserved,” said Mayor of Luverne Dr. Pat Walker.

With more leisure time available, Searight and his wife plan to utilize it.

“We’re going to travel a little,” said Marie.

“I have brother that lives in Japan, and he wants us to come visit.”
