Janet Dorman Lester 

 

Janet Dorman Lester, 82, a resident of Goshen, Alabama, passed away on Thursday, August 18. Funeral services for Mrs. Lester were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 21, at Glenwood Baptist Church with Rev. Travis Johnson, Rev. Sam Tate, Rev. Mike Thomas and Rev. Johnny Jones officiating.  Interment followed in Providence Cemetery in Glenwood, Alabama, with Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing.  Mrs. Lester was preceded in death by her husband, Lincoln H. Lester, and their infant son; her parents, George and Frances Dorman; and two brothers, Oliver Dorman and Webster Dorman.  She is survived by seven children, Larry (Debbie) Lester, Ronnie Lester, Virginia Beasley, Lonnie (Holley) Lester, Tony (Wyvonne) Lester, Lynn (Jerry) Engram and Patty (Curtis) Rushing; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; sister, Mary (Curtis) Slawson; and brother, James (Dot) Dorman.  The family requests that any memorial donations be made to Providence Cemetery, c/o Mr. Wayne Gibson, Glenwood, Alabama.  Her grandsons served as active pallbearers: David Lester, Jason Lester, Greg Lester, Nolan Beasley, Mylan Beasley, Davis Lester, Jeremy Engram, Bobby Phillips and Bryant Rushing.

 

Janice Faye Colquitt

 

Janice Faye Colquitt, 70, a resident of Luverne, Alabama, passed away on Tuesday, August 16.  Funeral services for Ms. Colquitt were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 20, from the Chapel of Turner Funeral Home with Rev. Derek Sowell and Rev. Huey Anderson officiating.  Interment followed in Brantley Cemetery with Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing.  Ms. Colquitt was preceded in death by her father, Dick Colquitt; mother, Addie Ree Atwell Colquitt; stepmother, Wilma Colquitt; and three brothers, Dickey Colquitt, Jimmy Colquitt and Billy Wayne Knighten.  She is survived by three brothers, Jerry (Linda) Colquitt, Junebug (Patricia) Colquitt and Ricky (Christy) Colquitt; 10 nieces and nephews, Jason (Laura) Colquitt, Kelly (Stephen) Hauck, Shannon Colquitt, Lynn (Scott) Miller, Tracey (Chris) Layton, Justin Colquitt, Nikki (Tony) Dozier, Katie (Jonas) Morgan, Reed Ledford and Preslee Reeder; 13 great-nieces and nephews; and several special friends and family.  The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Walker and Sandy, Dr. Patrick Walker, Crenshaw Community Hospital, Brother Sam and Laura Tate, Brother Derek and Stephanie Sowell and Faith Walk Ministries for their loving care and support.  Active pallbearers were Chris Layton, Scott Miller, Jason Colquitt, Jonas Morgan, Justin Colquitt, David Campbell and Karl Eiland.

 

 

Mattie Thomas Simmons

 

Mattie Thomas Simmons, 72, a resident of Luverne, Alabama, passed away on Sunday, August 21.  A graveside service was held for Mrs. Simmons at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 24, in Rock Hill Cemetery with Rev. Rex Reeves officiating and Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing.  Mrs. Simmons was preceded in death by her husband, Ferris E. Simmons, and her parents, Elsmore and Louise Hatch Merchant.  She is survived by her two children, Dennis Simmons and Cynthia (Jeffery) Savage, and six grandchildren, Jeremy Simmons, Teresa Simmons, Terry Simmons, Joseph Savage, Blake Savage and Rebekah Savage.

 

Katelyn Sanders Owens

 

Katelyn Sanders Owens, 24, a resident of Highland Home, Alabama, passed away on Saturday, August 20.  A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 27, at the Dalraida Church of Christ in Montgomery, Alabama with Minister Keith Ellis and Minister Larry Brady officiating.  Katelyn was preceded in death by her grandfather, Robert Russell Sanders, and her grandfathers by marriage, John E. Owens and William B. Dunn.  She is survived by her husband, Jarrod B. Owens; daughter, Addison Elizabeth Owens; parents, Dennis and Jamie Thomas Sanders; sister, Lyndsay Sanders; two brothers, Wesley (Lindsay Guest) and Chase Sanders; grandparents, James and Sally Thomas and Gloria Sanders; parents-in-law, Gary and Sandra Owens; brother-in-law, Chase (Casey) Owens; grandmothers by marriage, Mildred Dunn and Mary Owens; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorial donations be made to a trust fund to be set up in the name of Addison E. Owens.  Family and friends will meet at the church on Saturday at the service time.

 

Willie Pearl Andrews Mitchell

 

Willie Pearl Andrews Mitchell, 89, went to be with the Lord on August 18. Pearl was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Douglas, and her son, Elton. Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Lydia; son-in-law, Jim McNeal; and daughter-in-law, Mary Mitchell.  She will also be missed by her four grandchildren, Tiffany Mitchell Worthington, Brent Mitchell, Monica McNeal-Kopin and Andrew McNeal, as well as seven great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild. Pearl leaves behind one sibling, Merle Newton, and a host of nieces and nephews.  Pearl loved her family and was always happiest when surrounded by them.  Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 25, at Brantley Baptist Church, and funeral services will immediately follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Travis Johnson officiating.  She will be laid to rest at Brantley Cemetery.  Memorials may be made in Pearl’s name to Brantley Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society.
