The City of Luverne held local elections Tuesday. For the office of mayor, a runoff election will be held on Oct. 4 between Ed Beasley, who received 367 total votes at 39 percent, and Alan Carpenter, who received 379 total votes at 40 percent.

According to the 2010 census, the population of Luverne averaged 2,800. As of July 21, there were 1,936 total registered voters in the City of Luverne. Roughly 40 percent of registered voters in the past four municipal elections have voted.

In District One, there are 412 registered voters; District Two has 393; District Three has 352; District Four has 454; and District Five has 325.

Charlie ‘Cuz’ Johnson was elected for the office of City Council District One; Kip Smith was elected for the office of City Council District Two; Kathy Smyth was elected for the office of City Council District Three; a runoff election will be held for the office of City Council District Four between Elliott Jones, who received 107 votes, and Robyn Snellgrove, who received 94 votes; Edward (Eddie) Billings, Jr. was elected for the office of City Council District Five.

To run for the office of mayor, a candidate must be a registered voter on the day of the election, and must be at least 18 years of age. Candidates for municipal offices must meet the following requirements: must be registered voters in the city on the date the qualification papers are filed and must have resided within their district 90 days prior to the election and remain a resident of their district during their term of office.

“I want to thank those who supported me for City Council District Four,” Snellgrove said.

“Together, we can make a difference for Luverne. I appreciate your vote in the runoff on Oct. 4.”

The qualifying fee to run for the office of city council is $25 and the fee for the office of mayor is $50.

As of July 19, officers have already taken to their positions in the Town of Glenwood.

Running unopposed for the office of mayor was Billy W. Knight.

Running for the office of Glenwood Councilmember for District One were Scott W. Stricklin and Willie Long, Jr.

Running for the office of Glenwood Councilmember for District Two were Boyd Berry, John D. Johnson and Mary West.

“We will not have to have an election since they did not have any opposition,” said Sandra Berry, Town Clerk of Glenwood.

For the Town of Rutledge, Steven Phillips was declared mayor.  Council members elected were Eddie Stroud, Dany Garner, Bo Mount, Geraldine Franklin and Kenny Bruit.

The newly elected city council and mayor will take office the first Monday in November, and they will all serve four year terms.
