Kathy Plowden Smyth has announced her candidacy for Luverne City Council, District Three.

“For more than 27 years I have called Luverne home,” she said.  “During this time, I have served on the Crenshaw County Domestic Violence Task Force, am a founding member of Crenshaw County Women for Christ and have volunteered with the American Cancer Society for Legislative issues and our local Relay-4-Life.”

In 2000, she began serving as the Executive Director of Safe Harbor, which is the Children’s Advocacy Center that services Crenshaw, Butler and Lowndes Counties.

“My job as director of Safe Harbor has given me unique experience in grant writing, interagency communication and policy implementation,” she said.

Smyth is also a small business owner of ‘Re-Imagined’, member of the Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Merchants Association.

Smyth has been married to her college sweetheart, Randy Smyth, for 27 years and they have a son, Rann, who just graduated from Troy University. She attends South Luverne Baptist Church, where she is active in women’s ministries and community outreach.

“I am running for the Luverne City Council because I believe Luverne is a wonderful place to live and truly is the Friendliest City in the South,” she said.

“I want to use my experience to promote Luverne and bring new businesses to Luverne, which will create jobs and increase revenue.  Working to improve existing community services and infrastructure is vital to increasing commerce, tourism and the overall growth of our city.”
