SPECIAL TO THE JOURNAL:

Crenshaw County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) director Elliott Jones, in collaboration with Homeland Security, was able to secure federal funds to be used for new equipment for the Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Office.

“I am constantly searching for avenues to secure funds for our emergency services, especially our law enforcement,” Jones said.

“In today’s society, even in the smaller communities, crime has become more prevalent. Enhancements in our law enforcements equipment is a critical need if we are going to stay ahead of the criminals.”

This money was secured through a reallocation program that had money left over from the 2014 federal grants.

“This is a perfect example of teamwork,” said Crenshaw County Sheriff Mickey Powell.

“The Sheriff’s Office has an excellent working relationship with the county EMA department, and we work together constantly to help each other out. These funds will be used to buy needed equipment that will be used to assist in criminal investigations.”

Jones stated that more money has been secured for the Luverne Police Department as well and should be arriving within a few weeks.

“It’s all about working together and not giving up when we try to get federal funds awarded to our county and cities,” Jones said.

“There is a lot of money out there and we are going to get every penny available, so that we can continue to have enhanced capabilities within our emergency departments. It just takes a lot of hard work and determination.”

Jones is also currently working on a grant for hazard mitigation equipment that should be awarded before the end of this year.
