William “Bill” Vickery

William “Bill” Vickery, 94, a resident of Greenville, Ala. died on Wednesday, June 15, at L.V. Stabler Memorial Hospital.  A graveside service was held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 19, at Sunrise Memorial Park with Rev. Allen Stephenson officiating and Dunklin & Daniels Funeral Home directing.  The family received friends from 1:30-2:45 p.m. at Dunklin & Daniels Funeral Home. Vickery was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Ackerman Vickery; parents, William and Adelaide Vickery; brothers, Jim and John Vickery; and stepsons, Jimmy and Donny Effaldana.  He is survived by his nieces and nephews, Anne Vickery Kuperminc (Murray) of Farmington, CT, Jim Vickery (Debbie) of Chalfont, PA, John Vickery (Cynthia) of Phoenixville, PA, Jim Ackerman (Amanda) of Luverne, AL, Leslie Allmond (Mike) of Gainesville, GA, Louis Ackerman, Jr. of Carmel, NY, Leigh-Ann Mazzarulli (Marc) of Carmel, NY, Roger Paulus (Irene) of Cape Vincent, NY, George Paulus (Marti) of Bullville, NY, Robert Paulus of Washingtonville, NY and John Paulus (Lisa) of Montgomery, New York; great nieces and nephews, Sara and Julia Kuperminc, Jaclyn Vickery, Laura McAllister (Phillip), Chris Vickery, Anna-Belle and Tripp McCormick, Andy and Frances Ackerman and their mother, Alethea Gammage, Michael and Kendall Allmond, Nico, Lorenzo, Antonio and Liliana Mazzarulli, Jennifer McClendon (Alan), Rebecca, Adam and Wendi Paulus, Steven and Mary-Kate Paulus, Alexa and Amanda Rose Paulus; stepson, Peter Effaldana of Orlando, FL; brother-in-law, John Ackerman (Jan) of Greenville, Ala.; sister-in-law, Mavis Ackerman of Lakewood Ranch, FL; and many loving friends including Sally Duke and Reese Raybon.  Honorary pallbearers will be the Hardees Boyz breakfast club and his L.V. Stabler Family. Vickery was born in Brooklyn, NY on June 20, 1921.  He graduated from Pleasantville High School in New York in 1939.  He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and worked as a bookkeeper after his service in the Navy.  Upon retirement he moved to Greenville, Ala. where he was a volunteer at the Butler County Library and L.V. Stabler Memorial Hospital. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Butler County Ministerial Association, 416 Hamilton St., Greenville, AL 36037.

 

Vera Mae McCartha Weaver  

Vera Mae McCartha Weaver, 95, a resident of Pike Road, Ala., passed away on Friday, June 17.  Funeral services for Weaver were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 20, from the Chapel of Turner Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Dopson officiating and Jason McCartha delivering the eulogy. Interment followed in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Brantley, Ala. with Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing. Weaver was preceded in death by her husbands, Jesse Horace McCartha and Rev. Alvis D. Weaver.  She is survived by her two sons, Wallace (Ouida) McCartha and Roger (Toni) Weaver; two grandchildren, Jason (Jennifer) McCartha and Brittany McCartha; two great-grandsons, Justice and Jenson McCartha; her sister, Opal Peek; and brother, Edson Wallace.  Vera was a pastor’s wife for 48 years, and, though she had no biological daughters of her own, she was called “Mama” by many of the ladies of her churches. She loved both it and them. Active pallbearers were Gary Peek, Jerry Ryals, Bobby Ryals, Wally Prophitt, Jerry Pounds and Matthew Morgan.

 

Clydie Atwell Flowers

Clydie Atwell Flowers, 87, a resident of Brantley, Ala., passed away on Thursday, June 16. Funeral services for Flowers were held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 18, at Brunson Chapel Methodist Church with Rev. Johnnie Jones and Rev. Westley Spivey officiating.  Interment followed in Brunson Chapel Cemetery with Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing. Flowers was preceded in death by her husband, Karon Flowers; son, Dwanice Owens; parents, Lucious and Elvira Atwell; and sister, Carrie Flowers.  She is survived by five children, Janice (Charles Hall) Edison, Kenneth (Nancy) Owens, Marilyn (Peanut) Kennedy, Vickie White and Kyle (Kelly) Flowers; fourteen grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; sister, Clemmie Hudson; and brother, Clayborn (Katherine) Atwell.  Active pallbearers were Bill Flowers, Joe Flowers, Bill Baggett, Pat Horn, Keith Stephens and David Dunn.
