Authorities have confirmed that a body was found in the woods of Crenshaw County last Wednesday morning.

Crenshaw County Sheriff Mickey Powell and his team are not releasing any information regarding the identity of the body, but Powell says he is positive that the body does not belong to the missing Highland Home teenager Myra Alissia Freeman.

“We’re 99 percent sure who it is, but we’re doing a DNA test to confirm that,” Powell said.

“We can’t be 100 percent sure until the DNA is back. They should start working on the body, and it will tell us more about how the subject died. We hope to have the results back sometime this week.”

Currently, the Sheriff’s Office has identified the body as belonging to a male. Powell encourages citizens not to be fearful at this time, and to stand by for more information. As of Tuesday, the Sheriff’s Office had spoken to the forensics department to inquire on any updates regarding the subject.

“This is an ongoing investigation, but we really don’t feel like anybody here in the county is in any kind of danger. We just have to wait to get our reports back before we can get more information before any arrests are made,” Powell said.

Since the investigation of the body began, Powell noted that there has been a noticeable stream of social media postings related to the case. Much of the information, Powell says, is false and over exaggerated.

Powell encourages all involved with social media to be wary of posting information without knowing all of the facts.

“People were posting stuff based on speculation. Remember that we have a family who’s lost a loved one, so respect them when you’re posting stuff on social media,” Powell said.
