Greenville man dies in crash on ASU’s campus

A 24-year-old Greenville man was killed following a crash on the campus of Alabama State University in Montgomery Monday evening.

Demetrius Bell, was a passenger in a 2005 Ford Mustang that crashed into a tree on Jackson Street Monday at 6:20 p.m. According to authorities, Bell had to be extracted from the vehicle. He was taken to an area hospital where was pronounced dead.

“We offer our prayers and condolences to (Bell’s) family, friends and to our student body on this tragic loss,” ASU officials said in a statement.

The driver, June Malaefou, 21 of Louisiana, suffered non-life threatening injuries. She has since been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the crash.

She is being held in the Montgomery County Detention Facility on a $50,000 bond.

Authorities believe alcohol was a factor in the accident.
