Swann awarded SEAGD scholarship

A Greenville High School senior was among 17 students recognized Friday by the Southeast Alabama Gas District for their commitment to the communities in which they live.
Greenville’s Sellers Swann, along with the 16 other students, was awarded a Community Service Scholarship by SEAGD worth $1,500. The scholarship can be used at any university, college or technical school.
Swann has accepted an early admit into the University of South Alabama’s medical program.
“Southeast Alabama Gas District is a company that was founded to strengthen our local communities,” said Greg Henderson, SEAGD president and CEO. “Our community service scholarship gives SEAGD a chance to invest in future leaders from our communities who are already making a difference today.”
SEAGD’s Community Service Scholarship is a competitive scholarship available to high school seniors who serve their communities with a sincere intent of making the world a better place.
This year’s recipients have served in a variety of ways, including establishing fundraisers for dialysis patients, singing in nursing homes, assisting with the donation of more than 1,000 books to libraries in Africa, providing meals to local families and participating in activities with children who have special needs.
Regardless of whether these recipients impacted one person or thousands of people, the underlying message in their essays was captured by Casey Adkins from New Brockton High School, “Community service is more than just something to stamp on college applications; it is an experience that opens your eyes to community involvement.”
