Mary Petty Mason

Memorial services were held on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015 from the chapel of Turner Funeral Home with Rev. William Leverette officiating and Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing. Mrs. Mason had an honorable and hard work ethic. She drove tractors, plowed fields, picked cotton, and cleared fields in Florida with the use of dynamite to remove stumps. At the age of 12, she moved to Alabama where she met the boy next door, the love of her life for 57 years. She and Vernon raised four children of their own, plus many others. Some of her accomplishments were working at a sewing factory, driving a school bus, working at Thermal Components, and, finally, working with Hager Hinge for 26 years before she retired. After retiring, she thoroughly enjoyed spending her time with her grandchildren and helping raise all of her great-grandchildren, and then some. They built a lifetime of memories together, from fishing to boiling peanuts, hunting, riding the mule, passing down recipes (e.g. divinity), and many other adventures. She was also the family historian to anyone who wanted to listen. In her 74 years, she said she valued her family more than any tangible possession she owned. Mrs. Mason was preceded in death by her parents, James and Florence Burgess Petty; four sisters, Mary Lou Sexton, Lillie Burgan, Millie Burgan, and Janie Ruth Burgan; and six brothers, George Petty, Jim Petty, John Petty, Richard Petty, Jesse Petty, and Joseph Lambert.
