A few dozen of Crenshaw County’s finest stopped by the Luverne Multipurpose Center to share in fellowship, have a hardy lunch and celebrate the contributions of seniors on this, Senior Citizens Day.

“I welcome every one of you because I love every one of you,” said director Brunese Thomas.

The center doubles as the senior nutrition center, providing free warm lunches to 54 seniors and deliver 14 meals to people who are homebound. Crenshaw County and the City of Luverne pay expenses.

For Edna Ruth Lee Norsworthy, the meals are not what keep her coming. It’s the people.

“It’s the fellowship, you know? It’s just good to be around people,” she said.

The center is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., but no one is watching the clock. They talked about prayer in school and how simple things ought to be.

Thomas said people like to come early for games and music.

“We have fun down here. We sing, we play bingo, play dominoes, play cards and do different programs sometime,” she said. “Yes, we’re seniors. But, we still want to play, still want to do things.”

For Senior Citizens Day, pianist Becky Montgomery played hymns like “Amazing Grace.”

“She brought the Lord in here today,” said Willie Green.
