Longtime journalist Mona Moore is now editor of the Luverne Journal. She will be responsible for the content and design of the Journal and will contribute to Camellia Magazine.

“We’re excited to have Mona join us,” said Andy Brown, managing editor of Greenville Newspapers, LLC. “We believe that Mona’s experience at the Troy Messenger, as well as the Washington Daily News, both sister papers for the Journal, will serve her well as she endeavors to cover our community.”

Moore began her duties Friday and says she looks forward to covering news and events here.

“I’ve heard so many great things about the people of Crenshaw County and count myself as one of the lucky ones to now work here,” Moore said. “I look forward to getting to know everyone and continuing the Journal’s long tradition of covering the issues, people and events that make Crenshaw what it is.”

Moore was born and raised in California, but she has spent most of her adult life in the south — Mobile, Troy, Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Columbia, Miss. and Washington, North Carolina. She earned a B.A. and M.A. in communication from the University of South Alabama.

“After writing my thesis on small-town newspapers, I was eager to work in that setting,” Moore said. “Now, I’ve caught the bug. I couldn’t imagine enjoying any job as much as I do reporting.”

Moore began her journalism career as a sports reporter for the Columbian-Progress in Columbia, Miss. She won a first-place award in sports writing from the Mississippi Press Association for the first story she ever wrote. Moore quickly took on other responsibilities, including general news and photography assignments.

Moore covered the military beat for the Northwest Florida Daily News. She then came to Boone Newspapers, where she has covered everything from the First Lady to last January’s “Snowmageddon” at the Washington Daily News and the Troy Messenger.

Moore’s personal interests include road trips, roller derby, ice hockey, Washington Redskins, Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, fine art, auctions, antiques, cooking, wine tasting, social media and poker.
