Newton holds edge in funding

Candidates for House of Representatives District 90 have released financial data showing campaign contributions and expenditures through the first two weeks of May.

According to records accessed from the Alabama Secretary of State’s website, Republican candidate and incumbent Charles Newton has raised $86,472 to date with major contributions coming from a number of political action committees, including an $8,000 donation from Alabama 2014 PAC, a $16,000 donation from Progress PAC and a $10,500 donation from TRUK PAC.

Newton has reported spending $26,744 of his campaign funds, including nearly $12,000 in May.

Republican challenger Chris Sells has $58,686 in his campaign fund, including a $50,000 loan. Sells has received several $1,000 donations from private citizens, but has received no money from political action committees.

Sells has reported spending $50,823, including $29,356 in April.

Democrat Walton Hickman has raised $1,450, including an $1,100 loan.

Hickman has spent $1,335 of his campaign funds.

Newton and Sells will face off in the Republican primary on June 3. Hickman will face the winner in the general election in November.
