Democrats open election qualifying

The Butler County Democratic Party has announced that it opened qualifying for the 2014 elections on Monday.

Qualifying will close at 5 p.m. Feb. 7.

“We’re ready to accept candidates,” said Jesse McWilliams, chairman of the Butler County Democratic Party. “We’ll help them get the paperwork they need and get it filed.”

Locally, the sheriff, revenue commissioner, district court judge, board of education and coroner are up for election.

Statewide, the governor, state senators and representatives, most of the constitutional offices and a few of the appellate judges will be on the baallot.

Candidates for statewide offices must qualify with the state Democratic Party, while candidates for local offices must qualify with the local party. According to McWilliams, the qualifying fee is 2 percent of the salary for the elected position.
