The Butler County School District’s General Fund got a nearly $181,000 boost thanks to a surplus property sale.

Superintendent Darren Douthitt announced at Thursday’s regular meeting that the district netted $180,792.44 from the sale of 17 buses and scrap metal.

“We did very well,” Douthitt said. “I honestly didn’t expect that we’d get that much, but we sold the buses at just the right time when a couple of other states, Texas and Louisiana, I believe, are allowing people to purchase their own buses and drive them.”

  • The BOE approved participation in Alabama Association of School Boards’ Medicaid Administrative Claim Program.

According to Douthitt, the school district has participated in the program since 1999, and last year received approximately $120,000 in reimbursements.

“I call it a legal kick back in terms of the finances we receive from being part of the program,” Douthitt said.

Douthitt said the expansion of the program should account for a 60 percent to 65 percent increase in reimbursements received by the district.

The BOE voted to remain in the program for five more years.

  • Terry Williams was named as the BOE’s delegate for the Alabama Association of School Boards convention.

  • McKenzie School assistant principal and former head football coach Miles Brown was awarded the school’s athletics director supplement.

Brown stepped down from his post as head football coach in June to accept the assistant principal position. He was replaced by Josh McLendon.

McLendon had been receiving the school’s athletics director supplement.
