Greenville High School is hoping to climb into the driver’s seat Friday night.

The Tigers, who suffered a disappointing loss to Class 5A, Region 3 rival Selma High School last week, can inch up in the region rankings with a win over Saraland High School this week.

“A win would mean a great deal,” Greenville head coach Earnest Hill said. “After handing them a loss, we would be a No. 2 seed, and that would put us back in the driver’s seat, which is where we want to be.”

But scoring a win over the Spartans won’t be easy. Saraland is 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the region, with its lone loss coming at the hands of undefeated Jackson High School.

“They’re well coached, and they’ve got a bunch of kids that do exactly what the coach wants them to do,” Hill said.

“It’s a new school, and it’s a tradition — not a long-standing tradition — but those kids come from great families, and they know exactly what it takes to win big games,” Hill said.

However, Hill hasn’t resigned to going into Friday’s matchup as the underdog.

On the contrary, his game plan is overwhelmingly straightforward, no matter how formidable the opposition.

“We have to stop their rushing game and passing game on defense, and we’ve got to score some points on offense,” Hill said. “Certainly, they’re a really good football team.  They’re well coached.  We’ll just have to go down there and concentrate on playing our best game this year.”

The Tigers (3-4, 3-2 Class 5A, Region 3) will begin a three-game road stretch Friday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Saraland.
