A $1.2 million resurfacing project on County Road 50 is nearing completion.

The resurfacing spans from Alabama Hwy. 10 to the Crenshaw County line, and was funded by an Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program grant.

Funding for ATRIP comes through the use of Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicles Bonds (GARVEE). Through the use of GARVEE bonds, Alabama is able to access future federal dollars now in order to pay for road and bridge projects that are needed immediately.

According to Butler County Engineer Dennis McCall, the paving portion of the project is complete, and the guardrails should be installed this week.

The Butler County Road Department will now begin working on the road’s shoulder.

McCall said once the shoulder work is done, the road can be striped.

“It’s very close to being a completed project,” McCall said.

The project will be the second of 13 ATRIP projects completed in the county.

In September, a project to replace a bridge on County Road 53 that spans a tributary of Patsaliga Creek was completed.

The project increased the length of the bridge, which will service more than 18,000 acres of timberland in Butler and Covington Counties, from 76 feet to 102 feet.

Butler County was awarded $10.3 million through ATRIP to be used to resurface 92 miles of roads throughout the county.
