A Greenville man is facing animal cruelty charges after a malnourished dog was found at his home.

Michael Wayne Bell, 35, of Sea Road, was arrested Thursday by the Butler County Sheriff’s Office after it was discovered that he was keeping a dog in a pen with no food or water, according to authorities.

“It’s the worst case I’ve ever seen,” Butler County Sheriff Kenny Harden said. “He basically starved the animal to death.”

Harden said that deputies responded to the Sea Street residence on an unrelated matter, and that’s when a deputy spotted the dog.

“We carried the dog to the veterinarian, but there wasn’t anything they could do for it,” Harden said. “They had to put it down.”

Bell is currently being held in the Butler County Correctional Facility.
