A shutdown by the federal government that began Monday has created an uncertain future of the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program.

The Alabama Department of Health released a statement Wednesday that said the Alabama WIC Program is continuing to issue food instruments, and that participants are currently receiving one month of WIC benefits.

However, that could change depending on the length of the shutdown.

“Due to the federal government shutdown effective, Oct. 1, 2013, the future of the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program is uncertain,” the statement said. “The Alabama Department of Public Health will continue to reassess the impact to the WIC Program daily based on guidance from the United States Department of Agriculture.”
