Fort Dale Academy edged Autauga Academy 55-54 in overtime Friday night in Prattville.
The Eagles (4-0, 2-0 Class AAA, Region 2) led for much of the contest, only to see the Generals march down the field and take a seven-point lead with 1:25 remaining in the game.
And while for a moment it looked as though the Generals would duplicate their late-game heroics from last season when they topped the Eagles 49-47, Fort Dale had other plans.
The Eagles marched 50 yards to set up a field goal attempt with less than 10 seconds remaining in the regulation.
Senior Trent Brooks then booted a 37-yard field goal, his second of the night, through the uprights to send the game into overtime.
In the extra period, the Generals struck first scoring on their first play from scrimmage. The Eagles blocked the point after attempt, but a penalty negated the play. With a second chance, Autauga elected to try for two points. The Eagles once again answered with a stop.
Then on their first play from scrimmage, the Eagles knotted the game at 54-all when junior Ryan Burkett scored the last of his four touchdowns. Brooks split the uprights on the point after try to secure the win for the Eagles.
Burkett rushed for 125 yards on 19 carries. He finished with two 1-yard touchdown runs, a 10-yard scoring run and a 5-yard touchdown run.
Senior Chip Taylor rushed for 177 yards on 18 carries. He scored on runs of 28, 34 and 17 yards. Taylor also completed 10-of-18 pass attempts for 182 yards.
Senior John Coleman Poole led the Fort Dale receivers with three catches for 61 yards.
Senior Chase Whiddon paced the defense with 15 tackles. Senior Deaton Owens tallied 10 stops.
Taylor and senior Blake Harris each intercepted a pass.
