Tigers crash Flying Squadron, 47-14

The Luverne Tigers crashed the Highland Home Flying Squadron, 47-14, to lead the home team to its first county championship since 2009.

The Tigers scored first when quarterback Kenterius Womack hit Marcel McMillian for a 55-yard touchdown with 9:35 left in the first quarter.

Highland Home’s Chris Wooten scored a touchdown for the Flying Squadron with 7:30 left in the first quarter and the extra point was good, giving the visiting team its only lead of the night.

Luverne answered on its second possession with a touchdown from Jonathan Chambers.

Highland stopped the two-point conversion.

Chambers scored the Tigers next TD and a two-point conversion to extend the lead to 20.

Chambers ran 66 yards for another Tigers TD and Womack ran in the two-point conversion to put Luverne up 28-7 at the end of the first.

In the second, Uriah Brown recovered a Squadron fumble and took it to the end zone and his PAT was good, giving the Tigers a 35-7 lead.

Quez Watkins scored the final touchdown of the first half, to give Luverne a 41-7 lead going into halftime.

With 2:47 left in the third Chambers found the end zone for Luverne’s final score of the night.

Highland Home’s Lewis Johnson scored for the Squadron on a long run with 8:55 left in the fourth, and Andrew Akers PAT was good.

Luverne head coach Mike Dubose said he was proud of the way his team played.

“We did well at the line of scrimmage,” he said. “Our running and passing game was good. We started off soft, but improved.”

Dubose said he has some players banged up, but overall “we came out and played.”

Dubose said he felt the offense was improved over last week, but didn’t think the defense was as good.

Highland Home head coach Tom Pinkston gave Luverne credit.

“They’re very good and we couldn’t stop them,” he said. “We started off well.”

Pinkston said Wooten got injured and had to come out of the game.

“It made us change some things,” he said. “I feel like all of our players will be back by next week.”

Highland Home will play host to Zion Chapel and Luverne will play Central Hayneville.
