A 42-year-old man was shot and killed on Holly Hill Road Saturday night, authorities said.

According to Butler County Sheriff Kenny Harden, Kent Tanner, 60, shot and killed Dana Collins after Tanner discovered Collins mud riding on his property.

Authorities say that after the truck Collins was riding in got stuck, he and another passenger left the vehicle in order to search for help. They soon realized they had left a cell phone in the truck, and when they returned to retrieve it, they discovered Tanner waiting near the truck.

According to Harden, Tanner had the cell phone in his possession.

Harden said that’s when words were exchanged and the shooting took place.

“He had notified authorities to come check the truck out,” Harden said. “Before we could get there, the subject had called to say he had shot one, and to hurry up and get there.”

According to Harden, when deputies arrived on the scene they found Collins on the ground. Tanner was still present.

Collins was flown by helicopter to a Montgomery hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Tanner has been charged with murder and robbery, and is being held in the Butler County Correctional Facility on a $130,000 bond.
