The Crenshaw County Board Of Education on Monday took a look at what a new gymnasium could look like at Brantley.

Walter McKee of McKee and Associates showed the board the plans and photographs of the inside and outside of the Billingsley High School gym.

The gym seats 800 people, and would cost in the $1.6 million range, and include brick and metal façade, valted ceilings, durable toilets and conglomerate sinks, McKee said.

It includes a rollup door concession stand with handicapped access, retractable goals, hardwood floors and all the bleachers are motorized.

McKee told the board that florescent lights are the standard now.

The design also includes coaches’ offices, visitors’ and home locker rooms, PE storage and classroom space and a laundry room.

Additionally, there was talk about changing the location from the small area between the cafeteria, field house and high school building to the south end of the campus, which would put the building in a more visible area.

Brantley Principal Dodd Hawthorne said he liked the idea that the construction of the building would not disrupt the school day.

Superintendent Randy Wilkes told the board that he hoped to secure a lower rate loan, if the board agreed to tackle this project, a new roof at the central office and an egress at Highland Home.

McKee told the board that if they were ready to move on the gym project now, it would take three months to draw up the plans, a month to bid the project and they could start on the project in January. It is possible they could finish the gym in December 2014 or the spring of 2015.
