Former Greenville High School head coach Gene Allen has been named interim head coach at Pike Liberal Arts School in Troy.

The announcement came Wednesday after PLAS head coach Wayne Grant announced his resignation the day before fall practice opened, according to a report in the Troy Messenger. Grant, who won five Alabama High School Athletic Association state championships at Pike County High School, led the Patriots to a 1-9 record in 2012.

Allen coached at Greenville High School from 1991 to 1999 and amassed a 72-32 record while at the helm of the Greenville program, including back-to-back 13 win seasons in 1993 and 1994.

The Tigers defeated Homewood High School 28-14 to claim the 1994 Class 5A state title after losing a 35-21 decision to Oxford High School in the 1993 championship game.

Allen also led the Tigers to four region championships.

Following the 1999 season, Allen became the head coach at Talladega High School where he coached for five seasons and finished with a 13-37 record. In 2005 he became head coach at Robert E. Lee High School in Montgomery. He was 4-27 in three seasons at Lee.

Allen and the Patriots will square off with Fort Dale Academy on Oct. 11 in Greenville. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
