A Georgiana police car caught aflame Thursday night as an officer was making his way back to the station.

Police chief James Blackmon said that the incident occurred that night at around 10 p.m. and, despite an officer being present in the vehicle at the time of the incident, no one was harmed.

“He was coming from down the highway when the car caught on fire,” Blackmon said.

“We’re going to have to wait on the insurance company to come down and have a look at the car.  We don’t want to speculate one way or the other until we have something to support what our ideas might be.”

The vehicle was new, costing approximately $25,000.

Despite the apparent setback for the department, Blackmon added that the lost vehicle would have no noticeable impact on the department’s performance.

“We have a backup car, so this won’t handicap us,” Blackmon said.

“It’s just one vehicle in our fleet.”
