City approves sales tax holiday

Shoppers who hit Greenville stores during the first weekend in August could walk away from the register with a little extra cash.

That’s thanks to a resolution passed Tuesday by the Greenville City Council that authorizes the city to take part in Alabama’s 8th annual sales tax holiday.

“We’ve been doing this for a number of years and I think it’s something that is really appreciated,” Mayor Dexter McLendon said.

The City of Greenville has participated in the sales tax holiday since its inception in 2006.

The holiday, which is scheduled to begin at 12:01 a.m. Aug. 2 and end at midnight Aug. 4, covers clothing items less than $100, school supplies, books, computers and computer equipment.

Each county and municipality in Alabama decides if it will waive local sales tax, collect a portion or not participate in the sales-tax-free weekend. Retailers are required to participate and may not charge tax on items that are legally tax-exempt during the sales tax holiday.
