Freedom isn’t free.

That’s the message at the heart of the Greenville Lions Club’s annual Memorial Day Celebration.

“The true cost of freedom is paid for in suffering and loss,” said Hubert Little.

That’s exactly why Little and his fellow Lions Club members annually host the Memorial Day Celebration in Confederate Park. The celebration, according to Little, is an opportunity to recognize the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

“These men and women that gave their lives were somebody’s family,” Little said. “We owe it to them to honor their sacrifice.”

Each year, the program includes a Walk of Honor, where veterans from around the county march around the park.

“The (highlight) is the Walk of Honor, which has a tremendous emotional impact on the veterans,” Little said. “I’ve seen a number of veterans tear up over the years as they make the walk, while the people in attendance applaud.”

Live music will get underway in the park at 9:30 a.m., with the patriotic program set to begin at 10:30 a.m.

Local Boy Scouts will present the colors, andvocalist April Lowery is slated to perform the National Anthem. Jim McGowin will play “Taps” as fallen military heroes are honored.

Bill Stone will serve as the keynote speaker. He will speak about “The Articles of Association in 1774.”

The program will conclude with the Walk of Honor.

“We encourage all veterans and family members of veterans to come and join us. It is important to recognize and honor their contributions to our country,” said Little.

Following the program, a barbecue lunch will be provided in the park for veterans.

Handicap parking will be available in front of City Hall and there will be golf carts to transport those who need assistance reaching the seating area.
