A strong Christmas Day storm claimed the life of a Georgiana man.

Butler County Sheriff Kenny Harden confirmed on Thursday that an 81-year-old man died as the result of injuries suffered when a tree was blown over onto his house during Tuesday night’s storms. Authorities have yet to release the man’s name.

Harden said neighbors heard the the tree fall on the house sometime between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. Tuesday. The BCSO was alerted to the situation Wednesday morning.

The man was rescued from his home Wednesday morning and transported to Georgiana Hospital. He was later flown to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to Harden.

The man is believed to be the state’s only death as a result of the storm, which spawned 34 tornadoes from Texas to Alabama.
