Municipal elections set for Tuesday

Municipal elections across the county are scheduled for Tuesday.

Voters will have the opportunity to cast their ballots from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

In the City of Greenville, there remains just one race to decide.

Incumbent Mayor Dexter McLendon and councilmen Ed Sims (District 2), Tommy Ryan (District 3), James Lewis (District 4) and Jeddo Bell (District 5) were all unopposed when qualifying ended on July 17. All five were declared duly elected by a resolution adopted on July 23.

In District 1, Keith Gibson, Jerry Myers and Bryan Reynolds are seeking the seat currently held by Dr. Jean Thompson. Thompson has elected not to seek re-election.

Voters in District 1 will cast their votes at the Greenville Police Department, which is located on Administrative Drive.

“We’re looking forward to working with whoever wins the race in District 1,” McLendon said.

In both Georgiana and McKenzie, there are five candidates vying for the office of mayor.

In Georgiana, Jerome Antone, Donald Colley Jr., Larry Creech, Lynn Harold Watson and incumbent Mike Middleton are seeking election.

In McKenzie, Bill Henry, Kevin Henry, Lester Odom Jr., Mickeal Rodgers and incumbent Melvin Shufford are seeking the mayor’s office.

McKenzie’s council races feature Greg Lampley, Annette Merritt and Becky Stewart running for District 1. In District 2, Betty Brown, Lori Brown, Glenda Kervin and Shawnee Pierce are seeking office.

The polling places for McKenzie are as follows:

McKenzie Community Center (District 1), and Old Town Hall (District 2).

Georgiana’s council races include a race between Joy Cobb and Gwendolyn Crittenden in District 2, Malvin Brewer and Jacqueline Gandy in District 3, Valerie Pettway, Clementine Pugh and Jancie Stokes in District 4.

The polling places for Georgiana are as follows: Hank Williams Museum log cabin (District 1), Betterton Building in the Industrial Park (District 2), Multi-Purpose Senior Center (District 3), Georgiana School (District 4) and the Georgiana Community House (District 5).
