A rental truck traveling with pizza and ice cream crashed into the bridge running across East Commerce Street in downtown Greenville on Saturday.

According to Officer Ricky Meeks with the Greenville Police Department, the driver of the truck was not paying attention.

Meeks said this is not the first time he has seen an accident of this nature.

“This is my third accident report on this in three months,” Meeks said.

“They have flashing lights and signs back down the road and warning signs.

The truck did not damage the bridge but did cut the wires connected to the hazard lights.

“The bridge has been hit so many times,” Meeks said.

“It is well damaged of years of this going on.”

Greenville Mayor Dexter McLendon said there really isn’t much the city can do as far as maintaining or fixing the bridge.

“It’s not our bridge,” McLendon said.

“We had to get permission to put the lights up from the railroad, and we looked at painting it one time.”

CSX Railroad owns the bridge and owns all rights and privileges to make any changes to the bridge.

“We put lights up, we’ve put signs up, what else can you do?” McLendon said.

CSX inspects the bridge on a regular basis, and McLendon said that the city has no worry at this time about the structure of the bridge.

“It’s solid as a rock,” McLendon said.

“At night, (those signs are) flashing, and if you don’t see that, then you need to give up your drivers license.”
