Mamie L. Moorer, 89, of Niagara Falls, N.Y., passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 7, 2012, at her home, under the care of her loving and devoted granddaughter, Siobhan Betterson and family. She was born in Greenville, Ala. on March 28, 1923, the daughter of the late Annie B. Kent and George Searcy. She was the oldest of two children; one sister, Ida B. Smith.  She was educated in the Butler County school system and at an early age was a member of the St. Francis Church.  Mamie was blessed with four children; Bobbie, James, Sally and Ellen. She married Charles Edward Moorer in Troy, Ala.

Mamie migrated to Niagara Falls in 1966, to be near her dear Aunt Sallie and Uncle Eddie “Handy“ Roberson who both predeceased her. She became a member of the Bethlehem Revival Temple Church and was water baptized in Jesus’ name under the leadership of Rev. Wade Thomas, and accepted Jesus Christ as her savior. She later attended the Word of Life Ministries Church where she often participated in preparing food for various church events. She currently is a member of the Christ Redemption Tabernacle Church.  Mamie led by example. One of her bedtime routines was to read and study the Word. She instilled in her children at an early age, the importance of a job and prayer.

Mamie has always been a hard worker and an extraordinary provider for her family. She was an amazing mother who had a zest for life and protection of her family. A mother who “raised up her children” and helped take care of her grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mamie’s front porch was a regular site for summer evening family gatherings with an abundance of food, fun and laughter. She often held two jobs and always made sure a “home cooked” meal was prepared for her family. In between shifts she would come home prepare dinner then head off to her second job.  “They just don’t make them that way anymore!”  Mamie loved the beauty and splendor of a flower and vegetable garden.  She could take any decaying plant or plant root and nurse it to full blossom.  She often formed nicknames for various ones; constantly, bucking her eyes and making funny faces.  Her witty sense of humor made everyone laugh.  She was well respected in the community.  Mamie enjoyed reading her Bible, caring for her family (especially her grandchildren), cooking, baking, canning, gardening, doing word search and jigsaw puzzles.  She worked at Niagara University in the Culinary Department for more than 15 years, and held various homemaking jobs. She later was approached to become a foster parent stemming from her many years devoted to taking care of family members in her home. Mamie was a foster parent for several years until she retired. There was nothing left to be done on this earth by Mamie, she lived in God’s will praying for each of her beloved faithfully and by first receiving the Love of Jesus then sharing it.  She unknowingly touched and influenced many people.  Our loving Widow, Mother, Grandma, Great-grandma, Sister, Aunt, Cousin and Friend will be dearly missed in so many ways, but she will remain always in our hearts,

Mamie leaves to cherish her treasured legacy, one son, James E. (Charmaine) Kent of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; two daughters, Sally (Darryl) Glasco of Pendleton, N.Y., and Ellen V. (Burnise) Betterson, Jr. of Grand Island, N.Y.; one step-son, Robert (Betty) Marlow of Greenville, Ala.; one daughter-in-law, Clara Kent of Foley, Ala.; 17 grandchildren, Orenthal-OJ, Quiana, Siobhan, Burnise III, Darryl Jr., Courtney, Amanda, Ellen, Javaun, Amber, Donald, Shavon, Joshae, Willie, Damarius, Kiara and Shaiem-Bobbie Kent, Jr.; five great-grandchildren, DaQuan, Davon, Jarvis, Jordan and Emme; one sister, Ida B. Smith of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Mamie was predeceased by her husband, Charles E. Moorer; and her oldest son, Bobbie E. Kent (Clara).
