More than 100 survivors turned out May 4 to enjoy support, stories and a good time at the annual Relay for Life Survivor’s Luncheon.

Relay for Life came together to put on a lunch for recent cancer survivors and those who have battled it for 21 years like June Earnest, chair of the event.

“It’s honoring our survivors,” Earnest said. “This one is all about having one more birthday.”

Galahad Smith, Relay for Life event chairman, said part of Relay for Life is celebrating survivors each year at the luncheon.

“This year the theme at the luncheon was a birthday theme as the American Cancer Society is the official sponsor of birthdays,” Smith said. “The luncheon began by singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to all of the survivors. I think that it was a great success and I’m glad that we had so many to attend since this is what the ACS is all about.”

Lunch was catered by Priester’s Pecans and the event also featured singers like Bobby Johnson and local gospel groups.

“I think it allows the people to see that there is hope out there for them,” Earnest said. “Once you have it, you’re scared to death and you don’t know if the treatments are working. I think it gets the survivors out and lets them mingle with other survivors.”

The 2012 Butler County Relay for Life took place Friday night at the Greenville YMCA. A recap of the night’s events will be published in Wednesday’s Greenville Advocate.
