A Greenville landmark has closed its doors.

After 31 years in business, the Smokehouse closed its doors for the final time on Monday. Owner Margaret Poole, who confirmed the closing on Thursday, said the restaurant was hit hard by the recent economic crisis.

“It’s like burying my baby,” Poole said.

Executive Director of the Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce Francine Wasden said she hates to see any business in Butler County close.

“The Smokehouse has been here for years,” Wasden said. “It was just a real Greenville staple. You could mention Smokehouse in Greenville and they would know that exit. It was one of those places that was always open.”
