Greenville YMCA creates low-intensity Zumba Gold class

For those who may struggle with the high-intensity dance steps in a normal Zumba class, a new class has been created at the Greenville YMCA for those who want to follower simpler steps, but still receive the benefits of a Zumba-style workout.

Zumba Gold, which is a class for all ages, is designed for the older, active adult.

Heather Kendrick, the instructor for Zumba Gold, teaches the new class at the Greenville YMCA on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday at 9 a.m.

“Zumba Gold is a Zumba class for beginners of any age and older active adults,” Kendrick said. “It still has the same international music, but it’s just lower intensity.”

The one-hour class leaves out the jumping and intensive squats that a regular Zumba class typically features.

“I would say they could expect some international music with a few popular songs, and they could expect some steps from dances like the Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia and a little belly dancing.”

Kendrick said she has heard many times people say that they can’t dance. However, she said people don’t have to have a talent for dancing to participate in the class.

“I don’t want people to get frustrated with all this weird music and new choreography,” Kendrick said. “It takes a while to get used to it, and you won’t learn everything the first day.”

The hope is to get people up, moving and dancing, according to Kendrick.

“I enjoy it, and I think it’s fun,” Kendrick said. “The music makes it fun and gets people up and moving and doing things that they might not have realized they were able to do.”
