First Assembly of God has a new associate pastor, but he’s no stranger to Greenville. Marc Gibbs, originally from Pascagoula, Miss., moved up to Greenville after Katrina came in 2005.

“Katrina took our church and Christian school and half of our house,” Gibbs said. “So we rebuilt our home, and then we came up here in 2009.

“I’ve been working with another church and just recently went with First Assembly of God as an associate pastor.”

Even though Gibbs was able to rebuild his home down in Mississippi, the church and school he had been serving were unable to be saved.

“We had some friends (in Greenville) that knew that we were looking for a fulltime ministry position,” Gibbs said. “We said ‘well we’re going to see what the Lord has somewhere else.’”

According to Gibbs, his wife, Tammy, is as close to a co-minister as one can get.

“We’ve been married since 1980 and have always been working together in ministry,” Gibbs said.

While Gibbs will be preaching and teaching Sunday school, his wife will be head of the women’s ministry as well as also teaching Sunday school.

“We’re just doing whatever (the church) needs for each (program) periodically,” Gibbs said.

“We also do outreach in nursing homes and outreach in the community trying to get more children through the children’s ministry.”

The couple is just excited to be part of the ministry and a new place.

“There’s a lot of potential here,” Gibbs said. “We feel like there’s a lot of people that need a good church home. We want it to be like a church family and a family church.”
