Twenty-seven Greenville Middle School students got a taste of something sweet on Tuesday – success.

The students graduated from a 12-week program called Teach 1 to Lead 1.

The program, which is in its fifth year, is designed to teach the students principles and give them the necessary tools to succeed in life. It uses material from Celebrate Life International, a non-profit organization dedicated to transforming kids into responsible citizens.

Tuesday marked the students’ graduation, and Greenville Middle School principal Curtis Black said the impact the program has had on the students is evident.

“I have been extremely proud to see the leadership that has developed in these halls because of what you all have learned during these 12 weeks,” Black said.

Butler County Schools Superintendent Darren Douthitt also commended the students for taking part in the program.

“I am very appreciative of each of you volunteering your time and taking the opportunity to gain the values that this program teaches,” he said. “These core values will help you be successful in life.”

Teach 1 to lead 1 mentor Margie Kennedy said it takes four mentors to lead the two, 12-week courses they offer. Margie Kennedy, Chad McGriff, Susan Andrews and Tammy Gibbs all volunteered their time to make the program possible.

“We have four mentors who want to make a difference in the life of students,” Kennedy said. ‘We teach them principles such as respect, teamwork, integrity and enthusiasm.”

Greenville Mayor Dexter McLendon congratulated the students on graduating from the program, which he described as “extremely important,” and then issued them a challenge.

“Don’t make small goals,” he said. “Make big goals for yourself, and then achieve them.”
