Lady Eagles defeat defending champ

The Fort Dale Academy girls’ tennis team defeated AISA Class AAA defending state champion Morgan Academy 4-3 Thursday in Selma.

The No. 2 doubles team of Taylor Autrey and Kennedy Harris clinched the win for the Lady Eagles (1-0) with a 7-5, 6-4 win against Sarah Reeves and Annie Talton.

Fort Dale’s Harris, Ashton Scott and Marion Lightfoot earned wins in their singles matches.

No. 3-seed Harris defeated Lizzie Reeves 6-1, 6-0. Scott defeated Talton 6-1, 6-0 in a showdown of No. 4 seeds and fifth-seeded Lightfoot defeated Emily Sherrer 6-4, 6-4.

The Fort Dale boys’ team also defeated Morgan 4-3 on Tuesday.

The Eagles (1-0) trailed 3-2 after the singles matches, but rallied to claim both doubles matches to earn the victory.

FDA’s Daniel Hall Autrey and Mitchell Lewis defeated Hain Beers and McCain Levins 7-5, 3-6 (13-11) in a matchup between the teams’ top-seeded doubles teams. FDA’s second-seeded team of Matthew Butts and Matt Langford defeated Kyle Stewart and Connor Stephens 1-6, 7-5 (10-6).

Autrey and Langford also won their singles matches.

Top-seeded Autrey defeated Beers 7-5, 6-4, while No. 4 seeded Langford Stephens 6-1, 6-1.

Fort Dale will be back in action today when it plays host to Monroe Academy at Beeland Park. The match will begin at 3 p.m.
