During the month of March, the City of Greenville will offer amnesty to those with outstanding warrants or unpaid traffic tickets or fines.

“This is an opportunity for these folks to greatly reduce the amount of money they have to pay to clear these things up,” Greenville Police Chief Lonzo Ingram said. “Programs like this have been successful in other places and we hope it will be successful here.”

Selma, Montgomery and Mobile are among other cities in the state that have implemented amnesty month programs.  Mobile municipal court records show that the city collected more than $650,000 and cleared 3,500 tickets from its books during its amnesty month last year.

“This does two things,” Ingram said. “It helps give people a break on the cost of these fines during some tough economic times, and it also helps us clear out cases.”

Ingram said that the amount that must be paid will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
