Alphonse Briggs

Mr. Alphonse Briggs funeral services were held on Thursday, February 3, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. from Butler Chapel AME Zion Church. Rev. Harold O. Simpson, officiated. Burial followed in Magnolia Cemetery. Hudson Funeral Services, Greenville, Alabama directed. Mr. Alphonse Briggs was the first born to the union of Lula Ingram Briggs and the late Jimmy Glasgow Briggs. He departed this life on Friday, January 27, 2012 at the University of Alabama – Birmingham Hospital.

Alphonse joined the Butler Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church as a young child. He was a member of the Greenville High School Class of 1978.  He was an all-around athlete, excelling in football, basketball and track with his greatest love being football.  After completing high school, he received a football scholarship to Alabama State University.  He was employed with the State of Alabama Department of Transportation until he retired in 1999.  Alphonse loved life, sports, his family, his friends, his parents, and most of all his beloved sons.

Alphonse married Velma Scott Briggs in 1981 and to this union two sons were born.  Alphonse was an excellent father and he and his sons shared “One Love.”

He leaves to cherish his memories his mother,  Lula I. Briggs, his sons; Marcus Tremaine Briggs , Birmingham, AL and  Woodrow CeQuentin Briggs, Greenville, AL; two brothers, Alvin Briggs (Roxie) Florence, AL; Christopher Chambers, Montgomery, AL; one niece,  Kandiss R. Briggs, Florence, AL; one nephew, Master Sergeant Wilbert C. (Cassondra) Fair, Ft. Braggs, NC; two great nephews, Tasmain Fair, Huntsville, AL and Austin Fair, Ft. Braggs, NC ;two uncles,  Levy  Ingram Jr., Greenville, AL and Eddie Joe Briggs, Ft. Pierce, FL; four aunts,  Annie R. Ingram and  Mazie Jackson both of Greenville, AL,  Willia I. Powell, Birmingham, AL and  Frances Robinson, Ft. Pierce, FL.  He also leaves to cherish his memories, a host of cousins, friends and his special god children Zaccheus J. Smith, Lendice Williams, Aniya Carter, I’Kyekah Jackson and one special friend, Ms. Shirley Williams.
