A 24-point second period powered Fort Dale Academy to a 56-30 win against area-rival Monroe Academy Tuesday night in Monroeville.

The Eagles (16-5, 7-0) jumped out to a 10-1 lead by the close of the first period, but blew the game open by outpacing the Vols 24-9 in the second period to carry a 34-10 lead into the break.

Fort Dale head coach Reggie Mantooth credits the Eagles’ defense with creating the commanding lead.

“We were able to get some steals and turnovers and that led to some easy baskets,” he said. “We also did a better job of defending in the second period.”

Fort Dale forced 18 turnovers in the contest, and held the Vols to just 21.3 percent shooting from the floor. That helped offset a 38-30 Monroe rebounding advantage and a 1-for-7 effort from behind the 3-point line by the Eagles.

“We need to do better job rebounding the ball for us to win against good teams,” Mantooth said.

Cam Norman led Fort Dale’s offensive charge with 11 points on the strength of a 5-for-7 shooting performance. Norman also had a team-high six rebounds.

Chip Taylor added seven points and Jack Bates, Taylor Windham, Matt Langford and Tyler Millo each had six points for the Eagles.

Fort Dale will be back in action Friday when it plays host to Hooper Academy. Junior varsity action is set for 4 p.m. with varsity action to follow.
