Alabama First Lady Dianne Bentley visited the First Steps program to read her favorite book, “If You Take a Mouse to School.” Bentley’s platform is volunteerism, supporting children and families and reading. “Reading is extremely important,” Executive Director of Healthy Kids Lisa Nimmer said. “We know that if a parent will read to a child for 15 minutes a day that the child gains great benefits. Just spending 15 minutes a day with my children to do that will ensure a love of learning and anything we can do to promote early literacy will help Butler County because we’re giving them that head start that they need in life.” Bentley emphasized the importance of readings as well. “This is my favorite age,” Bentley said. “We have four sons and six granddaughters and I’ve worked in the church nursery for 28 years but the little ones are my favorites. They’re just so loving and honest and they’re a fun group to be with.” Advocate Staff/Patty Vaughan
