Pretty is as pretty does

At W.O. Parmer Elementary, a certain kindergarten class is learning more than just its ABC’s.
The Pink Poodle Club is one of about 10 clubs at W.O. Parmer that are all part of an after-school program.
“Pretty is as what pretty does,” is the phrase Jean Bauer, kindergarten teacher and head of the club, used at the beginning of the club’s Spa Day on Monday.
“This was just something that was easy for that I thought would be just so fun for the girls but we are going to do a philanthropic project with the Humane Shelter,” Bauer said. “We’re going to do some real poodle things. We have not really gotten completely set on that because we’re going to ask them what we can do and hopefully have a couple of trips.”
The purpose of the club is for 12 kindergartners to learn a little bit about manners, how to be a lady and just have fun, Bauer said.
“I was just trying to think of something prissy as I could think of,” Bauer said. “It’s just for fun. We work so hard at school all day. This was something strictly for fun but hopefully we’re going to learn some manners and some lady-like things. We’ve already learned some fancy words.”
Allison Rich with Beauty Control was there to show the girls how a spa would really work. She used lip-gloss, lotion, soothing music and much more.
Harper Watson, a kindergartner and a pink poodle said she has learned a lot.
“We put our napkins in our laps,” Harper said. “We get to make stuff. We learned about poodles.”
Bauer said she only wanted 12 girls in the club so she could have a smaller group to do things. She took the first 12 girls that paid a fee at the beginning of the year that covered T-shirts as well as things like Spa Day.
“We want to learn about being pretty on the inside as well as on the outside,” Bauer said.
Other activities the girls will be participating include the Christmas Parade, a Christmas party at Bauer’s house and a mock spend-the-night party.
“I think it’s important for them to do fun things at school that aren’t all academic but realize they’re going to learn things,” Bauer said. “We’re going to learn how to get along and we’re going to learn how to be nice to others and doing something for the Humane Shelter as well as have a really good time. We’re going to be exposed to some fun things.”
