Providence Cemetery added to Alabama Historic Cemetery Register

Providence Cemetery in Glenwood has been placed on the Alabama Historic Cemetery Register by the Alabama Historical Commission.

Lee Anne Wofford and other representatives of the AHC were on hand Monday night to present the town of Glenwood with a plaque commemorating the distinction.

“This is a program we have to preserve and protect historic places,” Wofford said. “Cemeteries can tell a lot about communities.”

Pictures of the cemetery were taken in May, and the recognition became official in June.

Statewide, there are 404 cemeteries on the register, and the cemetery becomes the 14th in Crenshaw County.

Other cemeteries on the Historic Cemetery Register include: Daniel Family Cemetery, Lightfoot Family Cemetery, Lowery Cemetery, Hopewell Cemetery, Mothershed Cemetery, Mothershed Cemetery, Morgan Cemetery, Cody-Odom Cemetery, Sexton Family Cemetery, Shreves Family Cemetery, Simerly-Theophilus Daniel Cemetery, Thompson Family Cemetery, Curtis Cemetery, Soloman Cemetery and Providence Cemetery.
