The Butler County Board of Education voted Tuesday night to adopt the Butler County Commission’s redistricting plan.

At a special called meeting on Sept. 1 the Butler County Commission voted 4-1 to approve a redistricting plan that will shift 210 voters into new districts. The redrawing of the district lines is necessary in order to comply with federal and state laws. Because Butler County operates under what is known as a single-member district, meaning each of the county’s five districts is represented by one commissioner, the law dictates that each district have the same number of voters. The latest census date revealed that Butler County’s population was not evenly dispersed among the five districts.

“In an ideal world we would have the same number of people in each district, but since this isn’t an ideal world, the law allows for a deviation of 10 percent,” Butler County attorney Calvin Poole said.

The BOE approved the plan to move 148 people from District 3 to District 4 and move 62 people from District 5 to District 1.

Butler County Schools Superintendent Darren Douthitt said there are only slight changes to the districts.

“I don’t think it will affect the board member districts much at all,” Douthitt said.

Douthitt said the BOE is simply adopting the County Commission’s redistricting plan in an effort to keep its districts in line with the county’s districts.

“I don’t know enough about it to speak to what their real mission was,” Douthitt said. “But I guess the idea is to balance districts as best as possible. We adopted the resolution, and we’re confident the work they did is for the best work for their constituents.”

Breakdown of Districts:

* Moved148 people from District 3 to District 4

* Moved 62 people from District 5 to District 1

*First, Second and Merrimac Streets, previously a part of District 3, will now be included in District 4.

*County Road 32 and County Road 79, previously a part of District 5, will now be a part of District 1.

*District 2 will remain unchanged.
